Topic: "Chair Work - where the blood and guts of Dentistry and Psychology overlap."
Psychologically speaking, there are two, and occasionally three critical periods of vulnerability when a patient engages with dental and specialist dental services. The first, it could be argued, is when the patient is in the chair about to undergo a procedure – this extends for the duration of the procedure; the second is when the patient must pay for the service; and the third is when a patient might elect to complain about a service provider. The presentation outlines a psychological technology known as projective identification, based on Psychoanalytic developmental theory, which explains some of the less obvious forces at play in these moments; it provides some understanding tools; and it also provides some selfmanagement tools for the practitioner. While the presentation sounds terribly serious it is also designed to entertain.
